O-Week Protest Update-Message from FIMS Deans

As FIMS Deans we want to express our serious concern about an incident on the evening of September 4 in which a group of student demonstrators protesting tuition fees, debt load and other university issues were apparently asked by Campus Police to leave the campus. While we have to rely on press reports for an account of this incident, it seems to raise grave issues related to freedom of speech, freedom of assembly and the possibilities of open intellectual exchange. The incident is of special concern to us because, we understand, several of the students who were asked to leave are from our MIT undergraduate program. We will be writing to the University’s senior administration requesting a full investigation of this troubling response to student activism.

Pamela McKenzie (Associate Dean, FIMS)

Jacquie Burkell (Assistant Dean Research, FIMS)

Amanda Grzyb (Assistant Dean Undergraduate, FIMS)
