To split up a very busy schedule of essay writing, critiquing hegemonic mentalities, and analyzing the pitfalls of capitalist systems, many of us like to unwind by plugging into pop culture and catching up with our favourite celebrities. In the midst of such stargazing, however, we’re bound to come across decisions that make us cringe as we experience embarrassment, anxiety and regret on behalf of these public figures. To prepare for a new year of celebrity mistakes, here’s a list of the top ten cringe worthy celebrity moments from 2013.
10. Dylan Sprouse’s Nudes Leak
Not even Mr. Moseby could control the fallout after Disney actor Dylan Sprouse’s naked selfies were released online. The internet was divided, with half mourning the loss of their innocent “Suite Life” child star, and the other half celebrating the fact they now had access to Sprouse’s tip(ton). To his credit, Sprouse handled the embarrassment well, by making jokes on Twitter and embracing his revitalized internet fame. Even his twin brother jumped in on the action, joking that the world has now seen him naked too. Do I feel a “Suite Life” college spinoff?
9. Reese Witherspoon Gets Arrested
You might be wondering what the cute, good natured star of “Legally Blonde” and “Sweet Home Alabama” could possibly be arrested for. Did she get fined for being too adorable? Did her charming smile blind a group of adoring fans? Did she liberate puppies from the pound? Well, not quite. The Oscar-winning actress was arrested in April for disorderly conduct after her husband was cuffed for a DUI. To make matters worse, Witherspoon actually told officers on the scene, “you’re about to find out who I am.” Witherspoon was then fined for using the most stereotypical line in celebrity history.
8. Jaden Smith Tweets
Twitter’s effectiveness as a social media platform depends largely on the way it is used. You can promote yourself in less than 140 characters, or interact with followers through replies and retweets. Then there’s Jaden Smith, who uses Twitter as a way to share his… unique outlook on the world. In 2013, Will Smith’s son got Twitter and proceeded to share some deep messages with us. Examples include, “How Can Mirrors Be Real If Our Eyes Aren’t Real,” and “Most Trees Are Blue.” Whether the 15-year-old is a poet or psychotic is up to the interpreter, but either way Smith’s tweets gave us some of the best “WTF” moments of 2013.
7. Paula Deen Uses The N Word
Celebrity chef Paula Deen got in a slippery situation this year, and for once it wasn’t because of butter. The southern chef was dragged into a court case by a former employee after allegations of racial workplace discrimination. If you’re worried that you’re favourite celebrity chef is a racist, don’t be. Turns out she only repeated jokes using racist, as well as anti-Semitic and homophobic, language. She was just kidding around guys, which makes everything totally okay, right? Right? I think dessert is ready.
6. Julianne Hough Wears Blackface
There are a few basic tips to remember when picking a Halloween costume. Make sure you have pockets for your phone and wallet. Don’t wear something that won’t allow you to go to the bathroom. Oh, and don’t dress as another ethnicity. Looks like “Footloose” star Julianne Hough didn’t get the memo as she dressed up as Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren from the 2013 hit “Orange Is The New Black”. After facing a wave of criticism online, Hough apologized for the blackface costume and stated that she was just such a big fan of the show and the character. Take the fandom down a bit, Hough.
5. Jennifer Lawrence Trips At Oscars
It probably took a lot for Jennifer Lawrence to find a silver lining when she tripped on her way to collect her Best Actress Oscar for “Silver Linings Playbook”. The young 22-year-old’s career may have skyrocketed after the win, but her Dior Haute Couture gown did nothing but sink as Lawrence face-palmed while laying on the stage steps. After a gallant Hugh Jackman ran to her aid, Lawrence made it to the microphone and received a standing ovation. The blushing actress must have been relieved to change into her much lighter dress for the Vanity Fair post award party later that evening.
4. The Kimye Relationship
It’s hard to limit the relationship between Kim Kardashian and Kanye West to just one cringe worthy moment. Between strange outfits, uncomfortable social media exchanges, and odd public appearances, we have more than enough options to choose from. Most would say naming their child “North West” was the tip of their 2013 crazy iceberg, but as though to top themselves the reality TV star and infamous rapper collaborated to make “Bound 2.” This 4 minute long video is full of poor green screen effects, uncomfortable topless shots, physics defying hairography, and an annoyingly creepy refrain of “uh uh honey.” Let’s hope the couple takes a break from the limelight in 2014. Please, for our sake.
3. Robin Thicke and Miley Cyrus Performance at the VMAs
Remember that time in 2013 when people couldn’t go three minutes without bringing up Miley Cyrus and twerking? After Thicke and Cyrus performed at the Video Music Awards with a stage show fully equipped with giant teddy bears, foam fingers, and awkward grinding, there were a lot of conflicting reactions. The majority scolded Cyrus from jumping around the stage with her tongue out, while others used the performance as just another example of the sexist undertones of Thicke’s song, “Blurred Lines.” Whatever the social implications were, the performance caused more than a few raised eyebrows as people fervently turned to the Disney Channel hoping for reruns of “Hannah Montana”.
2. Amanda Bynes’ Involuntary Hold
Although the insanity really began in 2011, it wasn’t until 2013 did “All That” to “Easy A” star Amanda Bynes really lose it. The year began with an iconic tweet from Bynes asking rapper Drake to “murder [her] vagina.” Since then, 2013 was a constant stream of getting kicked out of gyms, coloured wigs, public drug use, courtroom sweatpants, and trespassing. After starting a fire in a random neighbour’s driveway, Bynes was put under involuntary psychiatric hold. With her parents now controlling her affairs, it will be interesting to see what 2014 brings for the sweet then sour actress.
1. Justin Bieber Being Justin Bieber
There are a few reasons why Justin Bieber tops the list of cringe worthy, WTF celebrity moments of 2013 , but it’s mostly out of shame that one of Canada’s most famous performers would have so many PR fuckups. The year started off with only minor difficulties, with Bieber caught smoking a suspicious looking cigarette. Then, Biebs began a Twitter feud with Black Keys’ member Patrick Carney after receiving no Grammy nominations. Powered by a few more Twitter rants, Bieber spent the remainder of the year taking off his shirt, peeing in buckets, spitting on people, making weird Anne Frank comments, and announcing a fake retirement. Yep, that’s right, the news that Bieber was retiring from the industry was not true. That means Bieber has all of 2014 and beyond to deliver even more awful moments. Can you belieb it?
